A Time of Renewal

By Fr. Alex Andujar
Co-Spiritual Director

The season of Advent carries with it many themes. There is the joyful expectation in the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. There is also the watchful anticipation we are to keep as we wait for the return of Christ at the end of the age. This is of course all mixed into the celebration of Christmas as a holiday in our culture which brings with it the gathering of family and friends, the exchange of gifts, and hopefully a chill in the air. But we should also look at this time through the lens of Cursillo.

At its heart, Cursillo is about renewal. What is more renewing than the birth of a child? What can renew the world more than the birth of and eventual return of our savior?

We should never forget that Jesus Christ came to live among us so that our relationship with God might be reconciled and renewed. But Jesus Christ’s vision for renewal is not a simple refurbishment. It is not a new coat of paint. It is a complete overhaul. It is a complete change in who we are and how we see the world.

Our challenge this season is to receive the renewal that has been promised to us by God and then bring that renewal to our families, congregations, and into the world. It is then and only then that we can say with joy, “Merry Christmas!”.

From the Lay Director – July 16, 2017

From the Lay Director

Great News!!  Our Back to the Mountaintop – A Day of Renewal held on June 17 was a huge success.  There were 120 people in attendance, including a surprise visit from Bishop Dabney Smith, Canon Michael Durning, and the SE representative from the National Episcopal Cursillo Ministry, Barbara MacKenzie.  A leadership survey was conducted and 91 people indicated they serve or have served in a leadership position, many circled several leadership positions.  That means we are fulfilling our mission, to prepare lay persons to serve in leadership positions in their parish, in their deanery, and in the Diocese.  Praise the Lord!

Have you seen the new look of our website?  If not, go to https://www.cursilloswfla.org and take a look.  Special thanks to our new webmaster, Russell Tuff, and I thought his talent was music!  He is also very talented at website design.  The home page has a few photos that go scrolling by.  We are seeking more Cursillo photos, and since the only photo allowed to be taken on the weekend is the group photo, we would like some of you to take photos at one of your Ultreyas or your 4th Day and send them to Anna Ashworth at agashworth@aol.com.  Anna will get them to Russell.  If you have other comments or suggestions, please send them to Anna.

The Cursillo Secretariat just purchased a Spanish Lectionary to be used by the Spiritual Directors on the Spanish weekends.  The Lectionary in St Thomas Chapel is in English, so the Spanish Spiritual Directors have been bringing the one from their own parish, leaving the substitute priest without a Lectionary.  This is our way of showing our commitment to serving the Spanish community.  De Colores!

The end of our year is September 30.  We are seeking applications for several positions on the Secretariat (click here for more details) for the term that begins October 1 and would like some past rectors to apply as well as others wishing to serve the Cursillo community.  We are also seeking someone to take over as the Parish Representative Coordinator in the Servant Community.  Please pray about these positions and if led to do so, click here, complete the application for Secretariat/Servant Community and return it to me.

Yours in Christ,

Karen Jones, Lay Director
