From the Lay Director – July 16, 2017

From the Lay Director

Great News!!  Our Back to the Mountaintop – A Day of Renewal held on June 17 was a huge success.  There were 120 people in attendance, including a surprise visit from Bishop Dabney Smith, Canon Michael Durning, and the SE representative from the National Episcopal Cursillo Ministry, Barbara MacKenzie.  A leadership survey was conducted and 91 people indicated they serve or have served in a leadership position, many circled several leadership positions.  That means we are fulfilling our mission, to prepare lay persons to serve in leadership positions in their parish, in their deanery, and in the Diocese.  Praise the Lord!

Have you seen the new look of our website?  If not, go to https://www.cursilloswfla.org and take a look.  Special thanks to our new webmaster, Russell Tuff, and I thought his talent was music!  He is also very talented at website design.  The home page has a few photos that go scrolling by.  We are seeking more Cursillo photos, and since the only photo allowed to be taken on the weekend is the group photo, we would like some of you to take photos at one of your Ultreyas or your 4th Day and send them to Anna Ashworth at agashworth@aol.com.  Anna will get them to Russell.  If you have other comments or suggestions, please send them to Anna.

The Cursillo Secretariat just purchased a Spanish Lectionary to be used by the Spiritual Directors on the Spanish weekends.  The Lectionary in St Thomas Chapel is in English, so the Spanish Spiritual Directors have been bringing the one from their own parish, leaving the substitute priest without a Lectionary.  This is our way of showing our commitment to serving the Spanish community.  De Colores!

The end of our year is September 30.  We are seeking applications for several positions on the Secretariat (click here for more details) for the term that begins October 1 and would like some past rectors to apply as well as others wishing to serve the Cursillo community.  We are also seeking someone to take over as the Parish Representative Coordinator in the Servant Community.  Please pray about these positions and if led to do so, click here, complete the application for Secretariat/Servant Community and return it to me.

Yours in Christ,

Karen Jones, Lay Director

OPENINGS ON THE CURSILLO SECRETARIAT

The Cursillo Secretariat is currently accepting applications for Cursillistas interested in serving on the Secretariat for 1, 2, or 3-year terms, with the terms beginning in October 2017.  We have two 3-year openings, one 2-year opening, and one 1-year opening.  In addition, we also need a treasurer to serve a 1-year term (that can be renewed)

Having a servant’s heart is so important to God.  Although there are many ways to serve the Lord, please pray about serving on the Secretariat.  If you feel that God is leading you to serve in this way, complete the application below and send it to Karen Jones, Lay Director at deans.karen@gmail.com.

Back to the Mountaintop

We have a Back to the Mountaintop experience planned for June 17, 2017. Mark your calendars. All Cursillistas plus guests 18 and older are welcome to attend. It will be held at DaySpring in the new Conference Center from 8:30 am – 3pm. Registration begins at 8 am. This gives you a chance to renew Christ’s spirit within you – a Day of Renewal.

The day will begin with Morning Prayer and music, followed by some panel discussions on topics that you chose. The afternoon has two breakout sessions. You will select which breakout session you want to attend on the registration form. It will be coming to you soon by Constant Contact. We have some interesting speakers lined up, both clergy and lay persons.
One of the afternoon breakout sessions is specifically for those who are scheduled to serve in a leadership position on an upcoming weekend. The panel will also cover leadership positions in your parish, in the Diocese, or on the Secretariat.

We invite each parish to bring a display board or a sample of some of the missions their Cursillistas support. The parish displays will be on tables around the room, ready to share with others on breaks, to get ideas on some missions they would like to support. Parish displays will be set up between 8 and 8:30 a.m., and able to be viewed until 3 p.m.

The cost to attend is $15, which covers a continental breakfast and a full lunch. This can be paid when you send in your registration form or you can pay at the door.
Yours in Christ,
Karen Jones, Lay Director

Parish Representative Coordinator Report March 12, 2017

Parish Representative Coordinator Report

Cursillo Weekend #135 – As Of March 12, 2017

  1. A total of 24 parishes participated in Cursillo #135, Feb 2017, sending 27 Pilgrims and 45 Team members.
  2. Two parishes sent their first Pilgrims in over 13 years: St Peter’s Cathedral, St. Petersburg and Good Shepherd, Venice; each sent one Pilgrim.
  3. Across the Diocese of SW Florida, 31 parishes (or about 40% of the parishes in the diocese) have not sent a Pilgrim to a Cursillo Weekend within the past 10 or more years. These churches represent an estimated (based on 2015 parochial reports) Average Sunday Attendance (ASA) of 4440 people (or about 35% of the total 2015 ASA for the diocese) who have not received any of the potential benefits of having an active Cursillo Ministry.
  4. Of the 10 most active parish Cursillo Ministries spanning 2004-2013 (‘Legacy’ period), seven sent Pilgrims to Weekend #135. Of these, two parishes, St James House of Prayer, Tampa and St. Anne of Grace, Seminole, sent their first Pilgrims in over four years.
  5. The 13 most active parish Cursillo Ministries in the period spanning 2014-2017 (‘Current’ period) represent a combined 2015 ASA of 3165 parishioners and sent 6% of their combined congregations as Pilgrims over this time period. Six of these parishes sent over 10% of their individual ASA as Pilgrims between Feb 2014 and Feb 2017; four of these six sent 19% or more.
  6. During 2014-2017, 23 parishes sent at least 12 participants to Weekends as either Pilgrims or Team Members. Of these parishes, three sent many more Pilgrims than Team Members (ratios of 4:1 or higher); six parishes sent many more Team Members than Pilgrims (ratios of 4:1 or higher); with the remainder sending a more evenly divided mix of Team-to-Pilgrim ratios.
